Youth Protection

The safety and well-being of Troop 309 youth is of paramount importance to our organization and integral to everything we do. We must continue our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment at all times for all our youth members.

BSA Youth Protection Policies

Troop 309 requires that all adults (18+) adhere to BSA’s Youth Protection policies

  • Youth Protection Training (YPT) is required for all BSA registered adult volunteers.
  • Youth Protection Training is required to attend camping trips overnight.
  • Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years.

For T309 Leaders

All Scouts deserve a trained and knowledgeable leader.  To be considered trained in your position (and get that cool “trained” patch on your uniform sleeve) you need to take the following:

  • Position-Specific Training. Click here to learn more and for instructions on how to take your training online.
  • Additional Training. Some positions require additional in-person training. To view the requirements for your role, click here.
  • Hazardous Weather Training. All direct contact leaders must take Hazardous Weather Training to be considered trained. This can be taken online here.

Protecting God’s Children Compliance

As St. Francis de Sales is our Chartering Organization, Troop 309 has the benefit of our Charter’s support and its resources. St Francis provides Protecting God’s Children “Virtus” training.  This is in addition to BSA Youth Protection Training (YPT) required by BSA.  It is important for us to be in full compliance with the Protecting God’s Children guidelines which are dictated by the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.  St. Francis follows the policies of the Archdiocese of Chicago for the safety of all the children and young adults and is supported by Boy Scouts of America.

Who: Any leader registered with Troop 309.  Any adults who spend time with the boys helping with activities.

What: If you are not registered and active with Protecting God’s Children’s program please take time to follow the information on this page.

Where: Please check the website for dates, times, and locations for in-person classes. Announcements will be made should the class be held at St. Francis. (No classes currently offered due to COVID-19)

This is a good time to register as all the training is on line.  If you are already part of the program please continue to stay updated by logging into Virtus to review the monthly bulletins.

Web Page: virtus.org

Why:  This is very important as it is key to our Charter and is an added benefit to the Troop.  Virtus has good information and is a great resource for us to know how to further protect our children.  Also has good training on what to look out for when it comes to seeing signs a child is in harms way and what to do.

The necessary instructions for completing the Protecting God’s Children compliance items are attached below.

  • Certificate of Completion for the VIRTUS class which is now being offered online
  • Completed registration for the national background check through S2 Verify (done through their Virtus account on the Virtus website)
  • Certificate of completion for Mandated Reporter online training
  • Completed CANTS form
  • Completed Code of Conduct form
